Inveresk building developments
Inveresk building developments

This is the view I get every Thursday morning from where I normally work in the Inveresk Library. It seems like very slow progress but this building should be finished for next semester, as some of the new faculties transfer over from Newnham.

Thank you again for your ongoing partnership in the work that is happening at Uni. I have continued to be encouraged by the students coming along each week and the community that is growing together. I hope you are also encouraged by these updates as you pray for this ministry.

This time, I hope to let you know how some of the students I am catching up with are going. Currently, I am meeting with 4 students at various times during the week. They're all at different stages of faith, including one who is still to commit his life to Christ.

One-to-one Discipleship

Meeting with students one-to-one is one of my favourite things to do. It's a time when I get to sit down with them to read the Bible and discuss life together. It's particularly great to meet with younger students, who are still maturing and are thinking more seriously about how they are living for God.

While it's something I enjoy, it can also have its challenges. Often students cancel at the last moment, and the conversations we have can sometimes bear weight on my mind. Meeting like this does mean I get to know them quite well and have a greater insight into what they do each day, their priorities and who they spend time with, etc. This semester there have been a few harder conversations that have come up.

For a bit over a month now, I have started meeting with one of the student leaders. We are currently reading through The Trellis and The Vine together. I thought this would be helpful for him, as he is thinking about doing pastoral ministry in the future and it should be applicable in some of the ways he is already serving. It's even been good for me to reread and be reminded to focus on growing people, as we apply it within Uni Fellowship.

Meet Andrew

Hi, my name is Andrew, currently in the fourth year of my Bachelor of Arts and Science, majoring in mathematics and philosophy. I enjoyed being part of Uni Fellowship since enrolling in UTAS and joined the executive team this year. So far, it has been particularly encouraging to see believers helping each other become more mature in Christ through fellowship (Hebrews 10:24-25), which was particularly evident at the Kickstart conference back in February.

There is a student with whom I hope to start catching up soon and bring another student along with me. I was in the cafeteria during lunch one time just before Easter. He sat down at the same table as me and I started a conversation by making a witty comment about the two extra meals he had with him and we started talking about church. He came along on Good Friday and has been wanting to come again but studying often distracts him. Please pray we can meet again soon.

Connecting with Students in Accommodation

During the study break before exams, we are hoping to put on a lunch for the students living in accommodation at Inveresk. Our hope is to do more on the new campus next semester but this will be a way to break the ice and build some new relationships. We will be connecting with someone who manages the community garden to run this and highlight what is growing directly outside the apartments.

I know some of you are really good cooks and enjoy doing that. If you would like to assist us in cooking a soup ready for lunch on May 30th, then please reach out to me. It would be a great blessing and another opportunity for you to support this ministry to the students.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for Z* as I continue to stay in contact with him and that we can meet to talk about Jesus again soon.
  • Pray for the lunch we hope to put on for the students during the study break and for the new relationships, we will make. There has been a lot of paperwork so far to organise this with the Uni.
  • Ask for a growing conviction within the students in sharing Jesus with their classmates and friends.
  • Pray for our upcoming Mid-Year Conference (June 27-30) as students spend 4 days together, delving into the theology of the Son of God.
